Understanding Plaque and its Impact

Plaque is a sticky layer of material loaded with bacteria that forms on teeth. It’s responsible for causing cavities, gum irritation, and potentially leading to gum disease. When plaque isn’t removed, it can result in gums pulling away from the teeth, creating pockets filled with bacteria, leading to potential tooth loss.

Apart from sugary foods, plaque accumulates from starches such as bread, crackers, and cereal also contribute to acid formation by the bacteria in plaque.

Common Dental Emergencies and First Aid Steps

Toothache

  • Clean the area around the aching tooth thoroughly.
  • Rinse your mouth using warm salt water to remove trapped food.
  • DO NOT apply aspirin to the sore tooth or gum.
  • Use acetaminophen for temporary pain relief and see your dentist urgently.

Injuries to Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

  • Apply ice to any bruised areas.
  • For bleeding, use sterile gauze or a clean cloth to apply gentle, firm pressure.
  • If bleeding persists or doesn’t stop after 15 minutes, seek emergency medical attention.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth

  • Handle the tooth by its crown, avoiding the root.
  • Rinse gently without excessive cleaning.
  • If possible, reinsert the tooth into its socket, holding it with clean gauze or cloth.
  • If reinsertion is not possible, store the tooth in milk or water and see your dentist immediately.

Broken Tooth

  • Rinse the injured area with warm water.
  • Use a cold compress on the facial region of the injury.
  • Try to recover any fragments of the broken tooth and seek dental attention promptly.

Other Urgent Situations

Potential Broken Jaw:
  • Secure the mouth closed using a handkerchief, towel, or tie.
  • Head straight to an emergency medical facility.

Bleeding After a Baby Tooth Falls Out:
  • Place folded gauze over the bleeding area and bite down for 15 minutes.
  • If bleeding continues, consult your dentist.

Cold or Canker Sores:
  • Over-the-counter treatments can offer short-term relief.
  • If sores are persistent, please schedule an appointment with us.

In any emergency, acting swiftly is crucial. After administering the suggested first aid steps, always ensure you contact a dental professional for a follow-up.
